Knockbain House – The Farm

Knockbain House is situated on the family’s large working mixed farm. It consists of 700 acres of rolling grassland and woodland with some arable land in the Strathpeffer valley. We produce top quality beef from a herd of suckler cows, and lamb from 400 breeding sheep together with barley for Scotch whisky and seed potatoes.

Check out our farm website here:

We have planted many small woodlands and hedges over the past 35 years and we have been runners-up in the Scottish Finest Woodland awards.

Currently we are involved in a wetland creation scheme aimed at re-establishing breeding Lapwings to the area. Knockbain is one of the best sites in Scotland to view Red Kites and we have recorded over 70 species of birds here, including Waxwings and the occasional Osprey.

We are currently co-operating with the Peffery Way Association by co-sponsoring the construction of a major walking and cycle path from Dingwall to Strathpeffer. The work is nearly half completed and the finished section runs through Knockbain Farm.

As part of the farm environmental policy, the house features a carbon neutral wood-fired central heating and hot water system. All wood fuel is grown on the farm and it feeds our wood-burning stoves and a heat recovery ventilation system.

We’re very happy to show our guests around the farm.

Within walking distance there is the excellent Dingwall Auction Mart which features a café, Drovers’ Exhibition, and regular livestock sales and furniture sales.
